Victorian Volcanic Plains Conservation Management NewsThe recent presentation by Steve Sinclair ARI, via the Grassy Plains Network is now available online. We often think of historical western Victoria as being a grassland ecosystem. But much of it was savannah, with many types of trees scattered across the landscape, including many non-Eucalypt species. These woodlands have almost all disappeared.Steve is a Senior Scientist at DEECA’s Arthur Rylah Institute for Environmental Research (ARI), and a member of the Friends of the Forgotten Woodlands. Steve is a botanist and vegetation ecologist, who’s been at ARI for over twenty years. You may view Grassy Talks here. Below is a pen and ink wash by reknown artist Eugene Von Guerard showing the type of vegetaion that may have been present in 1858 followed by some more recent photographs from Mount Elephant. Since Mt Elephant has come under community ownership much effort has gone into weed and pest animal control along with revegetation of certain areas.Eugene von Guérard, View to the Pyrenees from the crater of Mt Elephant 1858pen and ink and wash32.3 × 50.3 cm irreg.
