Sustaining Community | Strengths based approaches to social change and working with families & communities

Today, March for Australia rallies were held across the country. According to their website:For years, Australia’s unity and shared values have been eroded by policies and movements that divide us. Our streets have seen growing displays of anti-Australian hatred, foreign conflicts, and disintegrating trust, whilst mass migration has torn at the bonds that held our communities together. This march is a stand for the people, culture, and nation that built Australia – and for our right to decide its future.Their main demands are simple but telling:An end to mass migrationNo foreign flagsA third “Remigration Now” was removed. Remigration is a far-right proposal for mass deportation of immigrants (normally non-White) and their descendants, to their countries of origin (The Guardian). While organisers attempt to distance themselves from the far right, their links are clear. At the Sydney rally, one organiser explained the strategy unapologetically:Protect Australian heritage, culture, way of life. Next step, protect European culture… next step, protect white heritage. So it all means the same thing. Australian heritage — by saying it that way, it is more appealing to the public. It’s going to deter them from saying, “Oh, it’s a Nazi rally.” (ABC News)Unsurprisingly, these rallies have drawn strong support from extreme-right and neo-Nazi groups, with their representatives even speaking at events.A Counter-Demonstration in NewcastleAs someone who wants Australia to be an inclusive, welcoming country, these rallies trouble me deeply. In Newcastle, after much debate with myself, I went in to a counter-demonstration, but felt unable to stay for long. The main chant at the time was:Nazis, you’re not welcome here.I left with  feeling uncomfortable. Here’s why.First, it oversimplifies the problem. While neo-Nazis are clearly involved, I doubt most attendees are Nazis. To label them all that way is like saying everyone at Rising Tide’s protestival calling for climate justice is a “radical green” or that anti-nuclear activists in the 1980s were all communists. It misses the complexity. Many people at these rallies are likely struggling — socially, economically, or emotionally — in a world of rapid change. They are also victims of an economic system that values profit over people, a media and advertising environment that fuels fear and dissatisfaction, and political systems that thrive on division and conflict.Second, it risks hardening positions.Shouting labels rarely changes minds. In fact, it can make people more determined to defend their stance and push those on the margins closer to the far right.Third, and most importantly, it doesn’t align with the community we want to build.Martin Luther King put it simply:Returning violence for violence multiplies violence, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that. (King ,1967, pp. 62-63)And Gandhi reminded us:The means may be likened to a seed, the end to a tree; and there is just the same inviolable connection between the means and the end as there is between the seed and the tree… We reap exactly as we sow. (Gandhi 1951, p. 10)If we want a community built on respect, dialogue, and inclusion, then our strategies must reflect those values.Towards a Different ResponseI admire those who step up to confront racism and exclusion. Their courage matters. But I also believe our methods must match our vision. Labelling, ridiculing, or trying to silence opponents will not bring the change we seek.Instead, we need responses that open space for dialogue, connection, and understanding:  approaches that show, in both words and actions, the kind of society we want to create. That’s the harder path. But it’s the one that leads to a truly inclusive Australia.ReferencesKing, Martin Luther 1967, Where do we go from here: Chaos or community?, Harper and Row, New York.Gandhi, Mahatma 1951, Satyagraha: Non-violent resistance, Kumarappa, B, Trans., Navajivan Publishing House, Ahmedabad, India. If you liked this post please follow my blog, and you might like to look at:Principles of nonviolenceRising Tide’s Blockade of the World’s Largest Coal Port4 types of power: What are power over; power with; power to and power within? The Alternatives to Violence Project: Reflections on a strengths-based approach to nonviolent relationships and conflict resolution12 principles of a problem solving approach to conflict resolutionPower and strengths-based practiceIf you find any problems with the blog, (e.g., broken links or typos) I’d love to hear about them.
