It is for anyone who would like to leave a written remembrance in celebration of an amazing person.To do this, please leave a reply/comment.   (More detail: click on the “number of comments” under the name Jutta Cords to reach the page with comments, then scroll down to the end of that page to reach the field where you can leave a reply.)Thank you!Obituary published in the Valley News of Lebanon, NH on October 22, 2016, the Concord Monitor of Concord, NH on October 25, 2016, and (abridged) in the Register Citizen of Torrington, CT on October 24, 2016. Jutta Cords, 96, wonderful mother and friend to many, died peacefully on September 11, 2016 at The Birches in Concord. She was born April 3, 1920 in Berlin, Germany and raised there. In 1945 she married Helmuth Cords in the first wedding held in Berlin after the war ended. The Cords family immigrated to the United States in 1952, living first in New Jersey and then in California. After Helmuth’s death in 1972, Jutta moved to Grantham where she lived for 29 years before moving to Colebrook, Connecticut. In June 2016 Jutta moved to The Birches.Surviving Jutta are her daughter Claudia Damon and husband Edward of Concord, NH, son Manuel Cords of Colebrook, CT, and daughter Marina Cords and husband Tycho Sleator of New York City, and her grandchildren, Caroline Damon and husband Andrew Gardner, Sam Damon and wife Victoria Amorello, Allegra Cords, Olivia Cords, Clio and Isaac Sleator, and great-grandchildren Cecelia Damon and Sam Gardner.In her professional life, Jutta was an artist and a teacher. Unable to complete post-secondary education in Berlin during World War II because of race laws that labeled her as Jewish, she attended night classes in the United States, earning her college degree in 1969.   She taught children in rural California towns, in Princeton, NJ and in the Head Start-Follow Through Program in Lebanon, NH. Jutta kept the fun in learning, encouraging students to be creative and to do their best. For her, they usually delivered. Her own creativity and energy inspired her students, whether they were learning to read, to do math, paint or cook an Indian meal in her classroom. On the side, Jutta studied art, becoming an accomplished painter who painted on commission.Jutta took part in many community activities, including acting in community theater plays, serving on boards of organizations such as Upper Valley Youth Services that provide social services for vulnerable and at-risk children and Child Guidance Center in Bakersfield, California, running Robert F. Kennedy’s Princeton, NJ campaign office and actively participating in other political campaigns. She enjoyed her association with the Grantham Historical Society. For years she attended and supported performing arts venues locally and in New York City.By age 80 Jutta had reinvented her artistic self twice. Once was in 1978 when she turned her painterly sense of color and texture to weaving amazing fabrics including table linens and art to wear. Her second transformation was from weaver to creator of unique necklaces. Few were remotely symmetrical. She so enjoyed choosing beads for making each necklace that she felt guilty charging what most people would consider a fair price.Jutta and her parents were active in the German Resistance in World War II and Helmuth participated in the Valkyrie Plot of July 20, 1944. Jutta’s courage made her a family hero. While she insisted Helmuth was the hero, she was able to tell the story of their life during World War II in the documentary film, “Surviving Hitler: A Love Story.  She traveled with the award winning film from 2010-2012 giving interviews at film screenings and telling more of the stories that she, and Helmuth before her, had shared with school and civic groups.Jutta is remembered by her family with love and admiration for her prowess at storytelling, whether making up fairy tales or recounting historical events. They and her many friends will also remember her energy, generosity and hospitality, her interest in other people, her unshakeable optimism and cheerful spirit, and her unwavering courage and resilience in overcoming life’s hurdles. Not to mention her excellent cooking.Jutta’s family is deeply grateful to the caregivers at The Birches and to her medical care providers, Dr. David Lawrence and Justine Nims-Largy for the affection and excellent care they provided.The family welcomes you to read and contribute stories about Jutta at juttacords.worpress.com.
