Mateusz Matuszczyk | Web Authoring & Multimedia

The history of the Internet goes as far as late 1960’s, and is probably one of the greatest inventions of the Cold War. The US Army joined their forces with the IT students of Stamford University. The result of their work was the first network called Arpanet.Arpanet was the first real network using Packet Switching Technology in order to run. It first connected the computers in Stamford University with computers from University of California.Following the creation of the first network, programmers developed the first operating system called Unix, which became later on the foundation for systems like Linux and FreeBSD (the operating systems used for web servers/ web hosting services).  That was year 1969.The first huge event, that began the era of Communication Technology was development of the first e-mail. It happened in 1971 thanks to Ray Tomlinson, who also came up with use of ‘@’ to separate the username from the domain name. It’s been couple of years since Arpanet was created, and it was growing in size. In 1970, Arpanet network was established between Harvard, MIT and BBN and in 1973, thanks to the first trans-atlantic connection, the connection with London University was established. Interesting fact is that at this time, so only 2 years after e-mail was developed, the e-mail-related activity within the Arpanet network was almost 75%! That shows, how much potential for communication technology e-mail technology has.1974 was a breakthrough year. A proposition was made, to link networks similar to Arpanet together, and create a so-called “inter-network”. The inter-network would have no central control and would work around a transmission control protocol (which eventually became TCP/IP).TCP/IP is the Internet protocol suit. It’s the network model and a set of communication protocols used on the Internet and similar networks.Next step in the development of the Internet was invention of e-mail. First e-mail clients started appearing, offering users new functions such as ‘reply’ and ‘forward’.First public e-mail client was released in mid 90’s when Hotmail released their program for the first time.World Wide Web (WWW) Year 1980 brought new way of exchanging information on the Web. ENQUIRE- program written by Tim Berners-Lee (known as the ‘father’ of the Internet), allowed scientists at the labs to keep track of people, software, and projects using hypertext (hyperlinks).Tim Berners-LeeSoon after, HTML was born and first websites were written. The Internet started getting into the shape we know it today.;
