  "PageContent": "Chips Off the Old BlockThirty-nine years ago—back in October 1986, I was blessed to be able to travel down to Tbilisi, Georgia, with a group of American university students for the annual harvest festival, a.k.a. the Tbilisoba (თბილისობა)–a celebration of the rich history of this charming city. The weather was gorgeous and the people were extraordinarily hospitable. It was a very happy break from our Moscow studies. There was music and dancing; and we saw bits of various sporting events. And, I’d never before seen so many pomegranates, grapes, persimmon, quince, pears, plums, and apples in one place. In short, it was the PERFECT little escape. (And, I must say, the tasty churchkhela (candle-shaped nut candy) was a revelation.)Last summer, I used one of the below photos for my blog header, and out of nowhere, I had 1,400 hits on my blog in the space of two days. Clearly someone recognized themselves or a family member or friend. My posts are now mostly private, as my subscribers know, but in the interests of helping any of these folks relive an exciting moment in their youth, I am making this one public. By now, many of these people have either passed or are grandparents; perhaps even great grandparents. If you ever get a chance to travel to Georgia, do not hesitate. I would love to go back someday.
