120 Years of Electronic Music – The history of electronic musical instruments from 1800 to 2019

Lee de Forest’s ‘Audion’ triode vacuum tube valve of 1906 – the first ‘electronic’ audio oscillator.**120 Years of Electronic Music** explores the history, design, and development of electronic musical instruments from around 1880 onwards. This project focuses on researching and documenting the main themes of electronic instrument design prior to 1970; it is not intended to serve as an exhaustive list of more recent commercial synthesizers or software packages, as those topics are well covered elsewhere.For the purposes of this project, we define ‘electronic musical instrument’ primarily as an instrument that generates sound from a purely electronic source, such as vacuum tubes and transistors, rather than from electromechanical or electroacoustical sources. However, boundaries around this definition can be blurred; for example, instruments that use tone wheel generators and tape manipulation from the Musique Concrète era are included here for the sake of completeness and consistency.**120 Years of Electronic Music** is a free, open learning resource on the history of electronic music. It is used by academics, students, musicians, synthesizer enthusiasts, and anyone interested in the subject.120 Years of Electronic Music is hosted in London by SPC  – If you’d like to make a donation towards hosting costs, you can! – Thank you120 Years Of Electronic Music is an ongoing web project initiated in 1995 by the author, academic** and music-maker simon.crab@gmail.com, but also relies on a large, informal community of contributors, editors and critics – please feel free to get involved! The project is non-commercial and self-funded, with no advertising. You may make a small donation to the cause (see the link above) if you wish to support the project financially. The aim is to make the information on the subject available on a free and open-source basis, i.e., you may use the content in any way as long as the content owners are credited, and it would be courteous to acknowledge the source by linking to or referring to this site.Simon Crab, Hastings, UK. 2026*The name: ‘120 Years of Electronic Music’ project was begun in 1996; considering electronic music started around 1880, this was quite an accurate title for the time. Almost twenty years later, it’s somewhat out of date, but it’s become something of a brand name and hard to change.** You can download and read my PhD thesis, ‘Instruments of Division: The Role of Audio Technology in the Transition From the Weimar Republic to the Nazi State‘ (pdf) here. You can also purchase a copy of ‘The Routledge Handbook to Rethinking the History of Technology-Based Music’, which includes my chapter ‘The Irrational Roots of Electronic Music’ – here;
